Haywood RACE Report: Day 1 Interviews, pictures

The first day of Ski Tour Canada got underway today with chilly conditions, -14 deg. C. or so on the banks of the Ottawa river. The night before, Mother Nature tested the organizers by sending some strong wind gusts along that knocked down fences, banner and tents, necessitating some strong remedial work in the wee hours of the morning.

While the results on the track are a very important part of Ski Tour Canada, another important aspect is the exposure of World Cup racing to a large segment of the Canadian public, and especially skiing families and the next generation of racers.

The event saw great spectator turnout and enthusiastic support for the Canadian racers, even by the forerunners.

Alex is now 10th overall in the Ski Tour Canada standings, 31 seconds off the lead with a mass start 17k stage in Montreal tomorrow. Overall standings

There are many benefits of having World Cups in Canada, and a big part of it is the development opportunity it gives the younger skiers that don't often get to test their skills on the World Cup.

Knute Johnsgaard and Maya Macisaac-Jones took good advantage of those opportunities by scoring World Cup points today.
